What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to resist disease and heal itselft.

Chiropractors focus on the relationship between structure and function and how that relationship affects the restoration and preservation of health.  In addition, Chiropractors recognize the value and responsibility of working in cooperation with other health care practitioners when in the best interest of the patient.

Doctors of Chiropractic are nationally accredited and board certified to evaluate, diagnose and treat ailments of the neurological, muscular and skeletal systems.  A complex interralationship exsists between these systems and injury to one system often affect the other whether immediately apparent or not.

The Chiropractic perspective on health and disease emphasizes two fundamental concepts:

  1. The structure and condition of the body influences how the body functions and its ability to heal itself; and
  2. The Neuro-Musculo-Skeletal relationship is instrumental in maintaining health and in the healing process.

Hippocrates, the “father of medicine” used manipulative techniques, as did the ancient Egyptians and many other cultures. Manipulative therapy re-emerged in the late 19th century with the founding of osteopathic medicine and chiropractic.

Spinal manipulation is a therapeutic intervention that has roots in traditional medicine and has been used by various cultures, apparently for thousands of years.

Chiropractic Adjustments

In 1864, Andrew Taylor Still, D.O., M.D., the founder of modern osteopathic medicine, became dissatisfied with traditional medicine’s offerings after his father and 3 children died from spinal meningitis. He began incorporating manual medicine into his existing medical practices with remarkable success.

As a military surgeon, Still established credibility for manual manipulation with consistently better outcomes than his peers. During the Spanish Flu Epidemic from 1917-1919, osteopathic physicians had a 1 in 16 death rate when manual manipulative techniques for the lymphatic system were included in medical treatment compared to a 1 in 2 death rate with no manipluation(JAOA, 1919).

Today, Chiropractors perform over 90% of all spinal manipulations in the United States.

The clinical effects of spinal manipulation have been shown to include:

  • relief of musculoskeletal pain.
  • Shortened time to recover from acute back sprains (Rand).
  • Temporary increase in passive range of motion (ROM).
  • Physiological effects upon the central nervous system.

Benefits of Chiropractic Adjustments

Shekelle (1994) summarised the published theories for mechanism(s) of action for how joint manipulation may exert its clinical effects as the following:

  • Release of entrapped synovial folds or plica
  • Relaxation of hypertonic muscle
  • Disruption of articular or periarticular adhesions
  • Unbuckling of motion segments that have undergone disproportionate displacement

Our team of skilled practitioners integrates chiropractic with a host of other manual therapies and therapeutic exercise techniques to provide a comprehensive approach to eliminating your pain, restoring optimal function and improved performance.
